Drilling depth

Diamond drilling is a drilling technique that uses rods of different diameters to reach different depths in conventional terrain and salt flats. The choice of tool will depend on the terrain and its specific conditions, adapting to the characteristics of the subsoil to obtain optimal results in the extraction of geological samples.

Packer Systems

At Big Bear Drilling SpA, we use advanced packer systems to ensure precision and efficiency in obtaining samples from wells. Packers are specialized seals that, through different activation methods, isolate and sample specific zones within the well. Depending on the project's needs, we use hydraulic, pneumatic, or mechanical packers.

  • Hydraulic Packer:
The hydraulic packer is inflated by injecting high-pressure water from the surface. This system has two sections: one isolates the area of interest within the rod (HQ or PQ), and the other seals the zone to be sampled deeper in the well, firmly pressing against the walls of the borehole. This type of packer can reach depths of up to 800 meters, providing an effective solution for sampling in deep wells.
  • Pneumatic Packer:
The pneumatic packer uses nitrogen gas injected at high pressure from the surface to inflate. Like the hydraulic packer, it has two sections: one isolates the area of interest within the rod (HQ or PQ), and the other seals the zone to be sampled deeper in the well. This system is ideal for depths up to 400 meters, offering a reliable method for sampling in less deep but equally critical zones.
  • Mechanical Packer:
The mechanical packer works via a mechanical drive activated by pressing against the bottom of the well. This mechanism expands a rubber seal that isolates the area of interest by pressing against the well's walls. This packer is suitable for depths greater than 600 meters, providing a robust and effective option for various drilling conditions.
  • Sampling System:
In all cases, brine samples can be obtained on the surface through the high-pressure air injection system known as the "airlift," which allows a continuous flow of water to be recovered. Alternatively, a "bailer" extractor can be used to recover samples of 2 liters each time it is extracted from the well. These methods ensure the collection of representative, high-quality samples essential for analysis and decision-making in our projects.

At Big Bear Drilling SpA, we are committed to using the most advanced and suitable packer systems for each project, ensuring precise and reliable results in our mining drilling operations.
